The hotel
New walls in the old style.
Accor opened the Mercure in December 2022, its first hotel in Bukhara. The building is new, designed to echo the old city around it. The Uzbek architect Zoirsho Klichev took his lead from Bukhara buildings of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries: three storeys set around a courtyard, closed to the street, with a tall iwan at the centre. The rooms fill the three floors.
The materials are local: Bukhara brick, adobe plaster, limestone and handmade ceramics, with mosaics and geometric patterns throughout. The lobby is laid out like one of the covered trading streets of the old town. Outside, the hotel lists Lyabi-Hauz, the Magoki-Attari Mosque, the Kalyan Minaret, the Poi-Kalyan ensemble and the trading domes among its neighbours. Bukhara counts more than 140 medieval monuments on the UNESCO list.
- Saffron on the top floor The main restaurant, with Uzbek dishes through the day, a bar, a hookah lounge and a terrace looking over the old city.
- Pool and hammam An indoor pool of about four by fourteen metres, a hammam, a sauna, massages and a gym.
- On foot to the monuments Lyabi-Hauz, the trading domes and the Poi-Kalyan ensemble are all within walking distance of Samarkand Street.
