The hotel
Art Deco on Dunhua North Road.
The building took eight years to finish and opened in 2014 as Mandarin Oriental's first hotel in Taiwan. Its outside looks to classic European architecture. Inside, the MICHELIN Guide reads a tribute to Art Deco and the 1930s: marble floors, chandeliers and about 1,700 works of art and antiques, with a lobby chandelier of 50,000 crystals that took the Czech artist Tafana Dvorakova nine months to make.
The hotel stands in Songshan, the city's most established business district, close to Taipei Arena and fifteen minutes by car from Taipei 101. Its rooms start at 55 square metres, which the guide counts as the largest in the city. The restaurants were designed by Tony Chi, and the spa runs over two floors. Guests on the club floor have an outdoor courtyard of their own, where breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails are served.
- The spa About 3,500 square metres over two floors, with twelve treatment rooms, crystal steam showers and a tea lounge.
- The pool A heated outdoor pool of twenty metres, with loungers around it.
- Afternoon tea The Jade Lounge beside the lobby. Forbes Travel Guide advises booking about a month ahead.
