The hotel

A planter's house in the Hanthana hills.

The house at Hanthana was built for a tea estate while Sri Lanka was still British Ceylon: a low bungalow with columns and a veranda that wraps around it, set among tea fields and forest in the Hanthana range just south-west of Kandy. W15 has restored it as a small hotel, with heritage furniture, a library and a piano room.

Some rooms are in the main house, with four-poster beds and gardens of their own; the rest are in the old stable block, looking across to the mountains. Guests arrive from the railway station in a vintage Land Rover. Tea comes out all day, there is a tennis court and a croquet lawn, and a naturalist walks the estate with you to point out the birds and plants.

  • Tea country Visits to the surrounding tea estates and a tea factory, and high tea on the lawn.
  • On the grounds A pool in the garden, a tennis court and a lawn for croquet.
  • Kandy nearby The city and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are a short drive away.
