The hotel

The first tea bungalow resort.

Tea Trails opened in 2005, led by Malik Fernando, son of Merrill J. Fernando, who founded Dilmah. The family took over planters' bungalows in the Bogawantalawa Valley, built while Ceylon was a British colony. Tientsin, the oldest, dates from 1888 and is named after the Chinese village that supplied the first tea seedlings. Norwood followed in 1890, Castlereagh in 1925.

Dunkeld, built in 1925 and restored in 2015, opened to guests in February 2016. It stands at about 4,750 feet above Castlereagh Lake, the closest house to the Dunkeld Tea Factory. Each bungalow keeps its own drawing room, garden and pool, and can be taken whole. Guests walk the tea, tour the factory with a resident planter and kayak on the lake.

  • Everything included Morning bed tea, all meals, afternoon tea, most drinks, laundry and a private butler are in the rate.
  • The tea factory A guided visit to the Dunkeld Tea Factory with the estate's planter. The factory does not run on Sundays or public holidays.
  • Castlereagh Lake Kayaking and boat trips on the reservoir below the bungalows, and the Tea Planter's Tiffin Lunch outdoors.
