The hotel

Where Shangri-La began.

The hotel opened on 23 April 1971, the first that Shangri-La ever ran, on Orange Grove Road, just north of the Orchard Road shops. The Tower Wing came first, home to the Horizon Club rooms. The Garden Wing followed in 1978, every room with a balcony over the grounds, and the Valley Wing in 1985, with a driveway and a lobby of its own.

Fifteen acres of tropical gardens fill the space between them. The Garden Wing reopened in May 2012 after a renovation of 68 million Singapore dollars. Since 2002 defence ministers have gathered here each year for the Shangri-La Dialogue, and in 2015 Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou met in the hotel, the first meeting of Chinese and Taiwanese leaders since 1949.

Flying to Orchard Road.

Changi Airport is about twenty kilometres away, around 25 minutes by car by our estimate. Private jets usually land at Seletar, in the north of the island, about the same drive by our estimate; its business aviation centre closes from 10 pm to 7 am.
