The hotel
Since 1993 on the Mactan shore.
Shangri-La opened its resort on Mactan in October 1993, on thirteen hectares at the Punta Engaño end of the island. The shoreline was reshaped to make a sheltered beach cove 350 metres long. Just offshore, a marine sanctuary of six hectares holds more than 160 species, and guests can visit it for a look underwater. Bridges link Mactan to the main island of Cebu, and the airport sits on the same island as the resort.
The rooms sit in two wings. The Main Wing holds most of them; the Ocean Wing, upgraded in 2007 ahead of an ASEAN summit in Cebu, has the Ocean Club rooms with balconies over the Mactan Channel. The CHI spa village came in 2005, about 10,000 square metres of villas, gardens and pools built around Philippine healing traditions. Four restaurants and three bars serve the resort, from Cowrie Cove on the water to Tea of Spring in the gardens.
