The hotel

Rebuilt in three months.

The Marriott stands on Aga Khan Road in Shalimar 5, with the Margalla Hills behind it, a few hundred metres from the Prime Minister's house. It belongs to the Hashoo Group, founded by Sadruddin Hashwani, and runs under a Marriott franchise. In 2008 the building had five storeys and 258 rooms. Foreign visitors stay here, and Pakistani families come for special occasions.

On 20 September 2008 a truck bomb exploded at the gate, killing more than fifty people. The building was repaired within months, and the hotel reopened on 28 December the same year. Today steel gates and barriers stand around the building. Inside, a dark 1922 Rolls-Royce sits in the lobby, and the nine restaurants and bars cover Pakistani, Thai, Japanese, Italian and Chinese cooking.

  • Nine outlets The Royal Elephant for Thai, KIKU for sushi and teppanyaki, Zigolini's for pasta and brick-oven pizza, and THE LILLY for Peking duck.
  • Xavier Health Club A gym and an indoor pool, with a spa in the hotel.
  • To the airport A complimentary shuttle runs to Islamabad International, with a private saloon car for a fee.
