The hotel
A wild island in a biosphere reserve.
Landaa Giraavaru is about 600 metres long and 200 wide, some 120 kilometres north of Malé in Baa Atoll. A Maldivian family lived here before the resort; when Four Seasons opened on 1 November 2006, they were offered stays for life. The island was planned as a set of private domains, each villa behind its own turquoise gate, with much of the jungle left standing.
In 2011 UNESCO made Baa Atoll a biosphere reserve. Reef mantas gather in its waters between May and November, and the resort's Marine Discovery Centre, run by marine biologists, works on manta research, coral reef restoration and the care of injured sea turtles. Guests are briefed there before snorkelling, and can be called by phone when the mantas arrive. The resort also runs a hologram room, the first in the Maldives, where the Baa mantas swim around you on dry land.

Before you go.
- Arrival Check-in from 2 pm, check-out by noon. Seaplanes fly by daylight only; after dark, the route is a domestic flight to Dharavandhoo and a speedboat.
- Children Under-18s stay free in their parents' villa, the kids' club takes ages 4 to 12, and babysitting needs 24 hours' notice.
- Pets Not accepted.
- Diving The dive centre is a PADI Five-Star Career Development Centre.
Getting there
Flying to Baa Atoll.
Long-haul flights and private jets land at Velana International in Malé, and the resort's seaplane flies north in about 35 to 45 minutes, by daylight only. Later in the day, a domestic flight of about 25 minutes reaches Dharavandhoo, the atoll's airport, and a speedboat crosses to the island.
