The hotel

A tycoon's house by the river.

Leong Long Man, a trader from Guangzhou who sold porcelain, ginseng and fabric from a shop in Chinatown, built the house in 1929 on land bought from St Peter's Church. It had to hold four wives and twelve children. The style mixes Straits and neo-classical, and the porcelain floor tiles and teak fittings are the originals. The house looks over the Malacca River to Kampung Morten.

In 1955 the house opened as The Majestic Hotel. It closed in 2000 and slid into use as a run-down guesthouse, until YTL Hotels restored it and reopened it in January 2008. The rooms now sit in a newer building behind the mansion, drawn to echo it, while the old house keeps the restaurant, the lounge and the bar. Six months after the reopening, in July 2008, UNESCO inscribed Malacca as a World Heritage Site.

  • Kristang cooking The Mansion serves the Portuguese-Eurasian cooking of Malacca, with a market tour and cooking class for guests who want to learn it.
  • Spa Village Malacca Treatments drawn from Peranakan and regional traditions, with a pool and a glass-walled gym alongside.
  • A gin of its own Tanqueray Malacca Gin, a limited edition, is poured at the hotel and nowhere else.
