The hotel
A harbour wall that became a beach.
In 1899 the architect F. W. Ortloff built the Mole, a stone sea wall meant to give Swakopmund a harbour. Within five years a sandbar had closed the entrance, and the sheltered water behind it turned into the small town beach now called Palm Beach. The old Strand Hotel stood on the same spot until it was pulled down in 2008.
O&L, the Namibian group that owns it, broke ground on a replacement in November 2013 and opened the new hotel in 2015. Its design takes its cue from the town's old German buildings. The sea surrounds it on three sides and the Namib dunes rise behind, and in 2017 it was named Best Hotel Development at the Africa Property Investment Awards.
