The hotel
A barber's spare rooms, 1905.
On 5 July 1905 a hairdresser called Paul Miersch moved his business into a new building in Swakopmund and began letting his spare rooms to travellers. The hotel claims the title of oldest in Namibia, and the building is part of the town's run of colonial architecture.
In 1954 Sebastian and Elisabeth Rummel took it on and turned it into a grand hotel. It still runs on that model: rooms spread over three floors around a garden, underfloor heating in every room, a residents' lounge with a small library, and a formal dining room where the tourism board notes the crystal and china.
