The hotel

Marriott's first safari lodge.

JW Marriott opened its first luxury safari lodge in April 2023, on the Talek River inside the Masai Mara National Reserve. The camp stands on community land, with tented suites in four grades, from Deluxe to Ambassadorial, and a family suite made of two tents. The MICHELIN Guide notes how far it sits from the brand's city hotels, and Nairobi's main airport is 276 kilometres away. Guests come in by air to the Keekorok strip, or by road.

Each suite has canvas walls, a proper bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers, and a deck with its own Jacuzzi over the river. The open-air restaurant and the lounge are where guests meet between drives. Daily drives go out in safari Land Cruisers, after the Big Five and, in season, the Great Migration. The spa, the pool and a photography studio fill the hours between.

Arrival Check-in from 2 pm, check-out by 10 am, as Marriott lists them. The MICHELIN Guide gives 3 pm and noon, so we confirm the times with the lodge.

Getting there

Flying to Masai Mara.

Long-haul flights land at Jomo Kenyatta in Nairobi, 276 kilometres away; private jets also arrive there. Safari flights from Wilson reach Keekorok airstrip in about 45 minutes, and the lodge sends a free shuttle for the 28 kilometres to camp. By road from Nairobi the journey takes five to six hours.

Business & First Class Safari flights Scheduled safari flights leave Wilson in the morning and afternoon, with extra flights at midday in high season. Air Kenya and Safarilink serve strips such as Keekorok, Ol Kiombo, Musiara and Olare Orok; Keekorok is about forty-five minutes away, and stops on the way add time.
