The hotel

An independence gift, rebuilt.

The first Ambassador Hotel opened in 1957, a gift from the United Kingdom to the new state of Ghana. It had 150 rooms on four floors and stood for almost fifty years before it was pulled down in 2006. Kingdom Holding, the investment company of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, began building its replacement the following year, at a cost reported at about one hundred million dollars. Mövenpick, then also owned by Kingdom, was to run it.

The new hotel opened under the Mövenpick name in November 2011, on the same plot between Independence Avenue and the Ridge. Paintings, crafts and objects from the old Ambassador were restored and hung again. Gardens wrap around a lagoon-style pool, and the ministries, the World Trade Centre and the International Conference Centre are a short drive away. In 2017 Kingdom sold the hotel to Quantum Global, an investment group based in Mauritius, and Mövenpick kept the management.

  • The pool A lagoon-style pool in the gardens, which the hotel calls the largest outdoor pool in Accra, with a bar and barbecue beside it.
  • Executive Club A club floor with its own check-in, a boardroom and a lounge with a balcony, serving breakfast and evening canapés.
  • Room to move A 400-metre jogging trail through the grounds, a gym open around the clock and Thai massage on the mezzanine.
