The hotel
Built for a summit by the sea.
Labadi Beach Hotel was put up in eighteen months to house delegates to the Non-Aligned Movement meeting held in Accra in 1991, and it opened to the public on 22 August that year. Ghana's Social Security and National Insurance Trust owns all of it. In August 2026 it marked thirty-five years with a health walk led by its managing director, David Eduaful.
The buildings stay low, spread over about fourteen acres of gardens between the La shore and the Maale lagoon, and every room has a balcony. A banqueting hall seats up to nine hundred, so much of Accra's social and official calendar passes through. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip stayed in 1999, Princess Anne in 2007, and Prince Edward twice, in 2016 and 2018. In 2024 the Ghana Hotels Association named it Five-Star Hotel of the Year.
