The city
A medina on the harbour, a volcano at its back.
Moroni was a trading town long before it became the capital in 1958, when the seat moved from Dzaoudzi. Its old quarter runs down to a small harbour whose quay is only eighty metres long: paved alleys, tall houses with heavy carved doors, and the Badjanani Mosque, built in 1427 and given its minaret in 1921. In July 2026 UNESCO inscribed the medina on the World Heritage List with five others on Grande Comore and Anjouan, the first sites in the country to be listed.
Volo Volo, the larger market, is at the north end of town. Most of the shore is black rock; for sand, people drive up the coast to Itsandra. Behind it all stands Karthala, at 2,361 metres the highest point of the Comoros.
- The Friday Mosque Built in 1427 beside the harbour, with a minaret added in 1921, it is the oldest mosque in the medina.
- Itsandra A small seafaring medina just north of Moroni, also on the UNESCO list, with a beach below it.
- Iconi South of the capital, an older medina that holds the tomb of Prince Said Ibrahim, son of the last sultan of Grande Comore.
