The city

Ylang-ylang, medinas and mountain.

Anjouan packs some 360,000 people into 424 square kilometres, about 850 to each one, and climbs to 1,595 metres at Mount Ntringui, inside a national park. Many families grow ylang-ylang, and the island sends more of its oil abroad than anywhere else in the world.

Mutsamudu, the capital, keeps its citadel; Domoni has more people. In July 2026 the medinas of both were inscribed by UNESCO with four on Grande Comore. Moya is known for its beach, and for the pass of the same name, where children ride soapbox carts down the hill.

  • Mutsamudu The capital’s medina and citadel, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2026.
  • Domoni The island’s most populous town, with the second of Anjouan’s two UNESCO medinas.
  • Mount Ntringui At 1,595 metres the summit of Anjouan, protected as a national park.
