The city

Victoria under the mountain.

For more than a century the town was called Victoria; it took the name Limbe by presidential decree in 1982. The Germans laid out a botanic garden here in 1892, and Buea, sixteen kilometres inland on the flank of Mount Cameroon, was the capital of their colony from 1902. Limbe is still small (84,000 people at the 2005 census), and its other business is the country's oil refinery.

With Kribi, it is one of the two seaside towns that foreign visitors come to. Rain here is heavy, over 500 mm a month in July and August, so the season is short: December to February, with highs near 30 °C and the sea at 28 °C.

Land at Douala, drive to the coast.

Limbe has no airport for jets. Douala International, about 57 kilometres away in a straight line, is the arrival point; the strip at Tiko, closer by, is short, has no customs and sells only avgas.

Very wet, with the rain at its height from June to October. December to February is the dry season, with highs of 29 or 30 °C, around 30 to 60 mm of rain a month and the sea at 28 °C.
