The hotel

On the shore at old Victoria.

Limbe was called Victoria from 1858 until a presidential decree renamed it in 1982. The town lies on the Atlantic where Mount Cameroon comes down to the sea, and its beaches are made of black volcanic sand. The Atlantic Beach Hotel stands on that seafront, close to the town, and guests describe it as a hotel with a long history. Further along the coast is SONARA, the national oil refinery.

Before 2020 the state spent hundreds of millions of CFA francs on its renovation, adding new room blocks; Cameroon Tribune then called it a four-star address. Guests report sea views from the rooms and an older pool. In the same town are the Limbe Botanic Garden, laid out by a German team under Paul Rudolph Preuss in 1892, and the Limbe Wildlife Centre.

Flying to Limbe.

Douala International, the airport of entry, is about 57 kilometres away in a straight line; allow about an hour and a half by road, our estimate. Private jets clear customs at Douala too. The strip at Tiko, closer by, is short and sells only avgas.
