The city
Kanak culture and a French town on the lagoon.
Nouméa's beaches are strung along Anse Vata and its harbour lies at Port Moselle, where the municipal market opens at five in the morning from Tuesday to Sunday. Out on the water lie islets reached by taxi-boat, and Amédée, whose lighthouse turned 160 in 2025.
The southern winter is mild: from July the afternoons hover around 23 to 26 °C and the driest months, September to November, bring around 50 millimetres of rain. The sea is warmest from January to April, at 26 to 27 °C, the season of heavy rain.
- Tjibaou Cultural Centre Known for its architecture, and the place to start learning about Kanak traditions and history.
- Amédée Island A marine reserve forty minutes from the city by boat, with a beach and a lighthouse.
- Anse Vata The city's beach, with a promenade along the bay and islets just offshore.
