The hotel

Fifty years on the Anse Vata shore.

Investors from New Caledonia and America started the Château Royal in 1965, at the southern tip of Nouméa. It held its formal opening on 2 July 1973, by which time a management firm, UTH, was running it and 250 rooms had been added. From 1979 Club Med leased the site as one of its villages, until it closed the village in 2001; the site was empty by the end of 2002.

In 2008 the owners decided to rebuild. The 250 rooms of the main block were turned into suites, with function rooms and a wellness centre, and the hotel reopened in February 2011 as Royal Tera. It took back its old name in 2013, its fortieth year. In April 2026 Atout France gave it five stars, the first hotel in New Caledonia to hold them.
