The city
Vrijthof, the Maas, the marl hills.
Maastricht sits on the Maas where Dutch Limburg narrows between Belgium and Germany. On the Vrijthof, the Romanesque bulk of St Servatius stands beside the red Gothic tower of Sint Jan's; a few streets away, a Dominican church some seven centuries old has held a bookshop since 2006, with a two-storey bookcase climbing the nave. South of the centre, the Sint-Pietersberg is hollowed by some sixty kilometres of tunnels, cut as a quarry and used as a shelter in both world wars.
The town has long been a place to eat well: the MICHELIN Guide Nederland 2026 was presented here in October, and Château Neercanne, a terraced castle of 1698 on the Belgian border, keeps a starred dining room above its marl caves. Collectors know the town for TEFAF, its art fair; walkers come from May to September, when the afternoons reach eighteen to twenty-three degrees.
