The city
A city with the mountains at the end of every street.
Innsbruck lies hard against the Alps: from the centre, the Nordkette cable cars climb to 2,300 metres in half an hour. The Imperial Palace and the gilded shingles of the Golden Roof sit in the lanes below, Ambras Castle holds the collections Ferdinand II gathered in the sixteenth century, and the Bergisel jump has served two Olympic Games.
Summer is for walking and climbing above the city, from May to September, when afternoons reach twenty to twenty-five degrees and thunderstorms come and go. In winter a single pass opens twelve ski areas around the city and in the Stubai valley.
Arriving
A runway inside the city limits.
Innsbruck Airport lies on the western side of the city, about five kilometres from the centre; bus F links the terminal with the Hauptbahnhof in some twenty minutes. Munich Airport is about two hours away by road.
