The hotel

Concrete, glass and the Dumbara Valley.

Santani was founded by Vickum Nawagamuwage and welcomed its first guests in 2016, on fifty acres of hillside at Aratenna Estate, about twelve miles from Kandy. The Sri Lankan practice Thisara Thanapathy Associates designed it in concrete, stone and wood, and raised every room on stilts above the slope. The resort covers about 50,000 square feet of building, with a yoga pavilion, hydrotherapy rooms and a sauna.

The rooms stand apart from each other, each turned towards a single view of the Dumbara Valley through floor-to-ceiling glass. The spa cuts openings in its concrete walls to frame the jungle and the mountain. The MICHELIN Guide gave Santani one Key in 2025 and has since raised it to two. Days are shaped by the programme each guest chooses, from sleep to longevity.

  • Programmes Stays built around sleep, stress, gut health, longevity, women's wellbeing, mobility, or yoga and meditation.
  • The spa Treatments with a thermal salt bath, steam room and sauna, all included in the rate, and a yoga pavilion.
  • At the table Ayurvedic-inspired cooking, with ketogenic, cleansing and vegetarian menus.
