The hotel

Two Victorian hotels, rebuilt as one.

Broadway had two hotels from the 1880s, the Mannin and the Broadway. Both came down in October 2012, and building on the joined site began the following spring. The new Mannin opened in April 2016, put up by the local developer Keith Lord, and the tourism board graded it four stars. Its interiors draw on the arts and crafts movement, with Archibald Knox, the Manx designer, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh as the models.

Inside, the plan turns on a central atrium. Half the bedrooms look into it from balconies of their own; the others face Broadway and the gardens of the Villa Marina, with a glimpse of the sea. Every room is air-conditioned, which is rare on the island. The promenade is a minute away, and the Manx Museum and the town centre are a short walk.

  • The atrium A covered courtyard at the centre of the building, with half the bedrooms opening onto it from private balconies.
  • Liberties The ground-floor restaurant and lounge over Broadway and the Villa Marina, cooking with Manx produce wherever it can.
  • Easy access Graded under the National Accessible Scheme, with a lift, parking on site and charging points for electric cars.
