The hotel

A mansion with a mission.

Good Hotel Antigua opened in September 2016 in a refurbished colonial house on Calle del Hermano Pedro, inside the UNESCO-protected centre. Behind the street wall is a garden patio that can be seen from most of the building. The Dutch architect Remko Verhaagen kept the bones of the house and lightened everything else: white walls, pale wood, exposed beams and handmade furniture.

The founder, Marten Dresen of Amsterdam, also started Niños de Guatemala, an NGO that runs schools for local children, and the hotel was set up to fund it. Local makers supplied the tiles, the soaps and the sinks, some built from recycled materials, and the traditional pila washing basin was redrawn for the bathrooms. Woven huipils hang on the walls as art.

  • Local hands Tiles, soaps and sinks made in and around Antigua, and staff hired from the town.
  • The garden patio A planted courtyard at the centre of the house, with lounges and an open kitchen around it.
  • Stays that pay for school The group says each night helps a child from a poor family go to school for a week.
