The hotel

A guest house on an old henequen farm.

Galopina stands on a plot of forty by eighty metres that once belonged to a henequen farm, near the village of Seyé. The ground rises into a small hill of sascab, the pale limestone the Maya used for building. The Mérida architects TACO cleared the weeds, kept the trees and set the rooms into the slope and on its crest. It opened in 2022.

The owners, Elisa and Guillaume, run it themselves. Elisa did the interiors, mostly with second-hand furniture found at markets and restored. Around the house lies the Ring of Cenotes reserve, low jungle full of sinkholes. The MICHELIN Guide gave Galopina a Key in 2026. Mayapán, Izamal and Uxmal are all within a day's drive, and there are cenotes for swimming about forty minutes away.

  • The pool in the hill A round dipping pool behind the main house, cut into the hillside and half enclosed by a curved wall.
  • From the garden Breakfast is included, and dinner of three courses, usually fish or vegetarian, is cooked on request with produce from the hotel's garden.
  • Cenotes and ruins Cenotes about forty minutes away, Mayapán about twenty-five, and Izamal under an hour.
