The hotel

Houses on the hill at Plai Laem.

Samujana opened in 2011 on the north-eastern cape of Samui, where the hillside at Plai Laem drops to a coral cove. The architect Gary Fell, of GfaB Architects, designed the twenty-three villas with open living rooms that run straight out to the terraces, and every one of them has an infinity pool looking over the water. Hanuman Bay is about five minutes away on foot.

The villas are big houses meant for groups. The smallest has three bedrooms and the largest eight, and the estate can host a wedding of 250 guests. Each villa has a host and a housekeeping team, and Thai chefs cook in the villa kitchen. Villa Jacinta appeared in the third season of The White Lotus. The MICHELIN Guide gives Samujana two Keys.

  • Chefs in the kitchen Thai chefs cook lunch or dinner in your villa, and breakfast is served there every morning.
  • On the estate A beach, gardens and a floodlit tennis court, with masseurs and trainers on call.
  • Close by A rum distillery to visit, and the bars and restaurants of Chaweng and Bo Phut a short drive away.
