The hotel
Song and sea on Choeng Mon.
Kitalay joins two Thai words, kita for song and lay for sea. The resort opened in January 2022 as the first Kimpton in South East Asia, on the north-eastern corner of Samui, where Choeng Mon beach runs for more than a kilometre. The Thai studio P49 Deesign raised the buildings on stilted platforms in two tiers and used driftwood and work by Thai craftspeople.
The rooms are large from the start, close to sixty square metres, and many step straight into a pool; at the top sits a single two-bedroom villa of 628 square metres. Families get rooms near a kids' club of five hundred square metres with its own slide. Dogs have a park of their own, and pets stay at no extra charge. The MICHELIN Guide gives the resort one Key.

Samui Airport is about ten minutes away by car. Private jets land at Samui too, with parking and permits arranged ahead; Bangkok Don Mueang, an hour's flight away, is the alternative with a private terminal.
