The hotel

Rebuilt after the fire of 2020.

In 1789 Tobias Finkbeiner opened a small tavern for charcoal burners and forestry workers in the Tonbach valley. His family still owns the house, and Heiner, Renate, Sebastian and Matthias Finkbeiner lead it today. On 5 January 2020 a fire destroyed the old main house, about 230 years old, and the three-star Schwarzwaldstube inside it. Nobody was hurt.

Two years and three months later the family opened three new houses designed by the Stuttgart architect Egon Bermayer, clad in grey shingles of local Douglas fir. The MICHELIN Guide calls the result a modernist country lodge, with double-height rooms and wide windows on the forest. The Schwarzwaldstube won back its three stars, and in 2024 the hotel was among Germany's first three-Key houses.

  • Two starred kitchens The Schwarzwaldstube under Torsten Michel, with three stars, and 1789 under Florian Stolte, with one star and at most thirty guests a night.
  • The spa Nine treatment rooms, three pools including a heated outdoor pool, sauna and steam room.
  • For families A kids' club, babysitting on request, a tennis court and walks straight from the door into the Black Forest.
