The hotel

Mary Tilden Morton's hacienda.

Mary Tilden Morton, of the Morton Salt family, was a vintner, a sculptor and a pilot. In the 1980s she built this inn in Rutherford as a Spanish hacienda: honey-coloured stucco, terracotta roof tiles, heavy oak doors, and ceiling beams salvaged from a nineteenth-century barn in Ohio. She commissioned stained glass and murals for it and filled it with Ecuadorian textiles. The name recalls the Rancho Caymus land grant of 1836.

George Altamura Jr. later spent two years restoring the building, keeping the glass, the mosaics and the old beams, and adding patios, fire pits and lounges. Stonehouse Capital bought it in November 2021. The inn has no restaurant. Breakfast is included, wine is poured by the glass in the courtyard, and Rutherford Grill is a two-minute walk away. Beaulieu Vineyard is around the corner.

  • The courtyard A heated pool and a jetted hot tub at the centre of the hacienda, open from 7 am to 11 pm.
  • Original craftsmanship Stained glass, mosaics and murals commissioned by Mary Tilden Morton, kept through the restoration.
  • Neighbours Beaulieu Vineyard is around the corner, and Auberge du Soleil is just down the road.
