The hotel
Georgian on a Deco street.
L. Murray Dixon designed the Betsy Ross in the early 1940s, a Georgian building among the Deco hotels of Ocean Drive, and its first guests were soldiers training on Miami Beach in wartime. In 1972 Gloria Steinem ran the National Organization for Women from here during the Democratic Convention. Jonathan Plutzik's family took it on in 2006 and reopened it in 2009 after gutting the inside, keeping the facade.
In 2016 the hotel took over the Carlton, a 1937 Streamline Moderne building by Henry Hohauser on Collins Avenue. The architect Allan Shulman joined the two with the Orb, a rounded fibreglass passage four floors up across the alley, and the room count reached 130. The Writers' Room has hosted more than a thousand visiting artists, and jazz plays every night. Laurent Tourondel runs the restaurant, LT Steak & Seafood.
- The roof A pool and solarium above Ocean Drive, looking over the beach.
- The Writers' Room A residency for visiting writers and artists, alongside literary salons and the Miami Beach Classical Music Festival, which began here.
- Dogs welcome Dogs of any size; part of the pet fee goes to Miami Dade Animal Rescue and the SPCA in Zimbabwe.
