The hotel
Fellini's grand hotel.
The Grand Hotel opened on 1 July 1908, built for a Milanese hotel company to designs by the Swiss architect Paolito Somazzi. Its Liberty façade, with turrets and balustrades, faces straight out over the beach. A fire in 1920 took the two domes from the roof and they were never put back. War damage followed, and the building was restored in the 1950s.
Federico Fellini, born in Rimini, watched the hotel as a boy and returned to it as a guest. It turns up in Amarcord in 1973, and the park in front now carries his name. Italy declared the building a national monument in 1994, and the Batani family has owned it since 2007. Inside, the halls keep their marble floors, crystal chandeliers and frescoed ceilings, and the gourmet restaurant takes its name from La Dolce Vita.
