The hotel
From Hotel dei Bagni to Des Bains.
The building went up in 1908 as the Hotel dei Bagni, for the noble and well-to-do guests who came to Riccione to take the baths. The town had grown in the later nineteenth century with the help of Maria Boorman Ceccarini, whose name its main shopping street still carries. In the 1920s the hotel filled with aristocrats from Central Europe, the years when Riccione was Mussolini's summer residence.
After the war came English aristocrats and the Italian upper middle class. A large restoration followed in 1989, and since 2001 the Cenni family has run the hotel, modernising it while keeping its Liberty architecture. Today the beach is two blocks away and the centre close by, and the Republic of San Marino is about half an hour inland by car, our estimate.
