The hotel
Home by the river.
Casa del Rio opened in 2011, and the name is Spanish for home by the river. When it opened it was the only hotel set right on the banks of the Malacca River, two minutes on foot from Jonker Walk. It had 66 rooms at the start, and three places to eat and drink along the water. It belongs to the Boutique Collection of HPL Hotels & Resorts.
The building borrows from the town's own past: Portuguese, Dutch and Arab lines, walls in magenta, yellow and ochre over terracotta, and old wrought-iron railings. Inside, the rooms are Mediterranean in spirit with Peranakan details. From the suites the view runs across the water to St Paul's Hill and Dutch Square. Up on the roof are an infinity pool, a 20-metre lap lane, a gym and Bar Sol.
