The hotel

An ironmaster's house by the university.

Richard Perrott married Hannah Mary Barnes in 1815 and raised thirteen children at Hayfield. He ran the Hive Iron Works, one of the busiest foundries in Cork. The estate later passed to the Musgraves, the merchant family whose trading company was founded in the city in 1876. Over time the house fell into disrepair, and its gardens grew wild behind the wall.

The Scally family bought it and rebuilt it in 1995, opening the doors in 1996 as Cork's first five-star hotel. The lobby fireplace is original; the oak staircase was made again from the old drawings. The walled gardens behind the house follow those at Muckross in Killarney, and some of the trees are more than 150 years old. The Scally family still own and run the house.

  • Walled gardens Two acres behind a high wall, with trees more than a century and a half old, within walking distance of the city centre.
  • The Beautique Spa Ireland's first Elemis spa, with an indoor heated pool, whirlpool and steam room.
  • Afternoon tea Served in Orchids or, in fine weather, on the garden terrace.
