The hotel

Three centuries on Maryborough Hill.

Richard Newenham built Maryborough House in 1710 on the hill above Douglas, south of the city. His descendants kept it for close to three hundred years, until the O'Sullivan family bought it in the 1990s. The gardens and woodland around the house, about eighteen acres in all, are now listed, and the woods run right up to the house. Cork Airport is only about eight kilometres away.

The O'Sullivans opened the house as a hotel in 1997. The old house still holds the Drawing Room, where afternoon tea is served, and two suites with their eighteenth-century details. There are ninety-three bedrooms in all, many looking over the gardens, along with an ESPA spa and a health club with an eighteen-metre pool. In the dining room, Bellini's holds two AA Rosettes.
