The hotel
From Mobutu's trade centre to a river hotel.
The tower went up in the 1970s as the Centre de Commerce International du Zaïre, an office building of the Mobutu years, and for a long time it stood unused, a white elephant near the banks of the river. Then Kinshasa was chosen to host the Francophonie Summit of 2012, and the building was stripped back, refitted and opened as a hotel in time for it.
Kempinski took over in August 2014 on an eleven-year contract. The hotel is named after the river below, the Fleuve Congo. In July 2019 the management passed to Blazon Hotels, a company founded by Reto Wittwer, Ulrich Eckhardt and Avsar Koc. The building is still the tallest in La Gombe, and from the river-facing rooms on floors five to nineteen you look across the Congo to Brazzaville, capital of the other Congo.

N'djili International, east of the city, is about 45 minutes away without traffic, the hotel says; Kinshasa traffic can make it much longer. Private jets use the same airport.
