The hotel
The only terraced castle in the Netherlands.
Baron Daniël Wolf van Dopff, military governor of Maastricht, built the main house in 1698 on a slope above the Jeker, with a Baroque garden laid out in the valley below. An older castle on the site had been burnt by the people of Liège in 1465; the outbuildings and corner tower date from 1611. Every building is cut from local marl, and the caves dug for it, some going back to Roman times, still run into the hill.
Peter the Great is among the guests the house remembers. The Oostwegel family bought it in 1984, and the restaurant won back its Michelin star two years later. For three centuries nobody slept here as a paying guest. That changed on 1 March 2024, when seven suites opened in the old gatekeepers' lodge, designed by Roelfien Vos around a sixteenth-century turret. A night here comes with a table in one of the two restaurants.
- The marl caves Tunnels dug into the hillside, joined to the grounds and now holding the wine cellar. They are also opened for parties and dinners.
- The Baroque garden Formal terraces stepping down to the Jeker, restored to their original design.
- The old turret A sixteenth-century turret rising through two floors of the lodge, kept when the suites were made.
