The hotel
Post-modern on the lagoon.
The American architect Michael Graves designed the Sheraton Miramar in 1997, on the lagoons of El Gouna near Abu Tig Marina. He spread it across nine islands linked by wooden bridges, and mixed references to ancient Egyptian, Arabic and Nubian building into a composition that is plainly post-modern. Every one of the 339 rooms has a terrace or a balcony, over the water, the gardens or the sea.
The architects Bureaux Andrew Phillips have since reworked parts of the resort while keeping Graves's language. At Orient 1001, the restaurant on its own island in the lagoon, they redrew the pavilion so that pivoting doors and panels open it to the sea breeze, with smaller rooms inside that run out onto terraces and gardens. In the meeting rooms, every new colour was taken from elsewhere in the hotel.
- Nine islands Rooms, pools and restaurants scattered over islands in the lagoon, crossed on foot by wooden bridges.
- The Boat Bar Drinks and snacks on an old wooden boat moored in the lagoon.
- For families A kids' club for ages five to twelve at no charge, a children's pool, and a sports pool with access to the beach.
