The hotel
Domes and arches on a golf course.
Ancient Sands stands on a hill some twelve metres above the lagoons of El Gouna, in a part of town called Hilltop Village. Its buildings mix the Nubian vernacular with the Mediterranean, in domes and arches. The resort was built around its own golf course, eighteen holes and par 72, laid out by the American designer Karl Litten, with a driving range and a golf professional on hand for lessons.
Most of the accommodation is self-contained: suites from 33 to 170 square metres, apartments and townhouses, each with a kitchen and a living room. Families and groups of friends take the larger ones. The resort has no sand of its own; guests use Marina Beach at Abu Tig Marina, reached by a free shuttle every hour. Downtown El Gouna is about fifteen minutes away by tuk-tuk.

Hurghada International is roughly 30 minutes by car, by our estimate. It takes scheduled flights and private jets, which clear customs there; the small El Gouna strip is not an airport of entry.
