The hotel
A compound house on the old racecourse.
Kempinski opened Gold Coast City on 1 November 2015, on the site of Accra's old racetrack, beside the State House, the International Conference Centre and the National Theatre. The architects, Page, took the plan from the compound houses of West Africa: rooms wrap round a central courtyard shaded by a grove of cedars, and the pool deck sits one floor above it.
It was the first phase of a larger Gold Coast City plan, and with 269 rooms and suites it is the biggest hotel in the city. Rooms start at 50 square metres. Gallery 1957, named for the year of Ghana's independence, shows contemporary Ghanaian artists inside the hotel, and the Resense Spa fills three floors. The building was planned to run on its own for three days, with water treatment and generators on site.
