The hotel

A gardener's wine house on the Elbe.

Daniel Louis Jaques came to Hamburg from France to lay out gardens for the merchant Peter Godeffroy. He married the widow of a confectioner, took the name Jacob, and on 1 July 1791 opened her house above the river as a wine house. He planted the lime-tree terrace himself. His family ran the place until 1922, and in the summer of 1902 Max Liebermann stayed and painted the terrace.

One version of that painting hangs in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The other was lost for years until the Rahe family, who had bought the hotel in 1993, acquired it in 1995. They spent three years restoring the house and uncovered an old ice cellar and hidden wall paintings on the way. In October 2023 the French and German cabinets met here, and in 2025 the hotel joined Marriott's Autograph Collection, keeping its name.

  • The lime-tree terrace Laid out in 1791 and listed since 1956, a long terrace of clipped limes looking down on the Elbe.
  • A house full of pictures More than 500 works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Liebermann's Linden Terrace among them, and a room named after him.
  • Two sides of the road The hotel spreads over two buildings either side of the Elbchaussee, with rooms facing the river or the inner garden.
