The hotel
The festival hotel.
The first papers mentioning the house date from 1407 and are kept at Nonnberg Abbey. An innkeeper is recorded here in 1596, and by 1671 it was the Wirtshaus zum Goldenen Hirschen. The inn has held a permanent licence since 1859. After the first full Salzburg Festival in 1922 the owner refitted about seventy rooms in Biedermeier style, with telephones and heating, to draw the summer audience.
In 1946 Countess Harriet Walderdorff took it over, meaning to make it the festival hotel. With the architect Otto Prossinger she redesigned the whole house in a country manor style, and it reopened on 28 April 1948. The brewery building next door was added in 1970. Beamed ceilings, antlers and a hand-carved reception desk remain, and the staff still wear traditional dress.
- Opposite the Festival Hall The Festival Hall is across the street, and the concierge can look for festival tickets.
- Restaurant Herzl Austrian cooking under vaulted ceilings, in a former goldsmith's house next door.
- The courtyard bar Bar Goldener Hirsch fills the covered courtyard at the heart of the house.
