The hotel
A stupa among the embassies.
ITC Maurya takes its name and its look from the Mauryan dynasty. The building climbs in tiers that echo a Buddhist stupa, and the lobby is crowned by a panelled dome modelled on a chaitya, the old Buddhist hall of worship. A mural of the great parade of life glows overhead, and a bronze of the Emperor Ashoka stands in the gardens outside.
For more than forty years the hotel has housed heads of state on visits to the capital. Its walls carry the WelcomArt collection of modern Indian painting, with works by Krishen Khanna, M F Husain and Tyeb Mehta. It was certified the first LEED Platinum hotel in the world under the existing buildings scheme, and it also holds a LEED Zero Water rating. Bukhara, its best-known table, opened in 1977.
- Bukhara North West Frontier cooking since 1977: Dal Bukhara, Sikandari Raan and kebabs eaten with the hands.
- Dum Pukht Slow-cooked Awadhi dishes, sealed in their pots, in a dining room that has served them for thirty-five years.
- Kaya Kalp An Ayurvedic spa next to the outdoor pool and its sun deck.
