Five-star Corniche, Abu Dhabi

The hotel
Kiss a camel at the Sheraton.
The Abu Dhabi Sheraton opened on 10 December 1979, after a billboard had counted down the last hundred days. It took two years to build and was only the third big international chain hotel in the city, after the Hilton. The advertising promised guests they could kiss a camel, and the manager brought twelve musicians and singers over from Manila. Guests found a coffee shop, a cocktail lounge and a bowling alley.
Back then the hotel stood on the beach. Land reclamation has since pushed the shore out and lined the Corniche with towers, yet the modernist concrete block, with something of an old fort about it, is still here. At the fortieth anniversary the owner, Abu Dhabi National Hotels, set out to redo the lobby and every room while keeping the main building, and the rooms are now listed as newly renovated.
- Lagoon and beach A heated pool for adults, a children's pool and a lagoon, with direct access to the hotel's stretch of sand.
- The Tavern A British pub with sport on the screens, one of six restaurants and bars in the hotel.
- Le Pavot Spa Massages made to measure, with a fitness centre and a tennis court up on the roof.
