The hotel
Two old buildings, one hotel.
Stamford House went up in 1904 in a Venetian Renaissance style and became one of Singapore's first shopping centres. The neoclassical Capitol Building followed in 1933, next to the Capitol Theatre. Both stand in the Civic District, a short walk from the National Gallery, and both were restored under the Pritzker laureate Richard Meier before Kempinski opened the hotel inside them on 1 October 2018.
The late Indonesian designer Jaya Ibrahim did the interiors, one of his last projects. He kept the original chengal wood floors and the high corniced ceilings, and patterned the lamps and cornices after the Merlion. Because the rooms follow the shape of two old buildings, there are close to fifty different layouts across four storeys, and every one has a freestanding bath.
- 15 Stamford Alvin Leung's Pan-Asian restaurant, known for its laksa with char-grilled tiger prawns, with a bar of more than 160 rums.
- A saltwater pool An outdoor saltwater relaxation pool, with a three-room spa and a gym open 24 hours.
- The Capitol Theatre The 977-seat theatre is next door, part of the same complex as the arcade and the Capitol Singapore mall.
