The hotel
Shophouses under glass.
Bugis Junction was built over three old streets of shophouses, Bugis, Malay and Hylam. The developers rebuilt them, roofed them in glass and air-conditioned them, and the scheme was finished in July 1995 and opened that September. The InterContinental, opened the same year, is part of the development, with 403 rooms on 16 floors above the old streets. Bugis MRT station is about five minutes away on foot.
The decor follows the Peranakan families of Singapore, descended from Chinese traders who settled on the Malay Peninsula from the seventeenth century and married into local Malay families. Rooms in the heritage wing copy the shophouses of the 1920s, with carved wood, timber floors, duck-egg blue panels and louvred shutters. The hotel describes itself as the only Peranakan-inspired luxury hotel in Singapore.
