The hotel
Verdi's address in Milan.
The hotel opened in 1863 in a building by Andrea Pizzala, and it was the first in Milan with a telegraph service. In 1872 Giuseppe Verdi took rooms here while he worked at La Scala. He stayed for twenty-seven years and died in Suite 105, on the first floor, on 27 January 1901. The suite is kept as it was, furnished like his study at Sant'Agata.
Bombs destroyed the fourth floor in 1943, and Giovanni Muzio restored the building after the war. In the early 1990s a Roman defence wall turned up in the cellar. Caruso, Callas and Nureyev all stayed, and twelve suites now carry the names of artists who passed through. A wrought iron staircase still climbs through five floors, and in 1931 every room was given running water and a telephone.
- The Verdi Suite About 100 square metres on the first floor, where the composer lived and died, kept as the hotel's presidential suite.
- Suites named for guests Twelve suites honour artists such as Callas, Caruso and Visconti, with objects of theirs on display, from a Callas fan to paintings by Guttuso.
- Gerry's Bar In the lobby, a short walk from La Scala, and a habit for drinks before or after the opera.
