The hotel

A château on the hill, and Foster around it.

Heinrich Hürlimann, a Zurich restaurateur who also developed the Dolderbahn and the Dolder Waldhaus, commissioned a grand hotel on the hill. The Basel architect Jacques Gros designed it as a turreted château, and it opened on 10 May 1899 on the Adlisberg, about two kilometres from the centre and two hundred metres above it. Guests came up from the city on Hürlimann's rack railway, whose upper station is still next to the hotel.

The hotel closed in 2004. Norman Foster restored the château to its 1899 look and wrapped two new wings around it, and it reopened on 3 April 2008 after an investment of CHF 440 million. The spa alone covers 4,000 square metres. Heiko Nieder's The Restaurant has two Michelin stars, and in 2026 the MICHELIN Guide gave the hotel two Keys. A hotel shuttle now runs into town every hour as well.

  • The spa Four thousand square metres, with a 25-metre indoor pool kept at about 28 °C. It opens from 6 am to 10 pm, and the gym never closes for hotel guests.
  • The Restaurant Heiko Nieder's creative cooking, with two Michelin stars in the current Swiss guide.
  • Into town The Dolderbahn runs down to Römerhof, and a hotel shuttle leaves for the centre every hour.
