The hotel
The first grand hotel on the Paradeplatz.
Johannes Baur opened Baur en Ville here on Christmas Eve 1838, six years before his hotel by the lake. The house and its Orsini restaurant were rebuilt in the 1870s, and after a conversion by Pfleghard & Haefeli it reopened in June 1908 as the Savoy Baur en Ville. In the 1970s the interior was rebuilt again behind the old facade.
Credit Suisse owned the building for decades, and it passed to UBS in 2023. The hotel closed in 2022 and reopened under Mandarin Oriental in December 2023. The Paris designer Tristan Auer did the interiors, with hand-painted silk wallpapers, and the ballroom was restored. ORSINI, the restaurant name the house has used since the nineteenth century, came back as an Italian dining room under Antonio Guida, and the roof became a bar called 1838.
- ORSINI Italian cooking under the consultant chef Antonio Guida of Seta in Milan, with one Michelin star in the current Swiss guide.
- 1838 The rooftop bar, named after the year the hotel opened, with Asian small plates and a view of the city, the lake and the Alps.
- Paradeplatz The Bahnhofstrasse at the door, the main station about ten minutes on foot and the lake about five.
